EXE 501 – Biblical Interpretation (Hermeneutics & Exegesis Basics), a 2 credit hour course of studies in the Masters degree programs of Reformation International Theological Seminary.

Course Description:  2 credit hours  (Hermeneutics & Exegesis Basics)

This course introduces the student to grammatical, historical, and theological interpretations of Holy This course introduces the student to grammatical, historical, and theological interpretations of Holy Scripture with the specific purpose of using this skill not only for proper interpretation, but also as the exegetical foundation for biblical preaching.  The course shows the ways in which the “distance” between a biblical writer and his readers is removed.  However this is only accomplished as the reader of the Bible transposes himself into the time and spirit of the writer.  At the same time, it is not enough to simply understand the meaning of the writer (as secondary author) but the student must learn to know the mind of the Spirit, not only for his own understanding, but also for the purpose of bringing it forth to the people of God through teaching and preaching.  To that end the course examines: Hermeneutics in general; Semantic, Syntactic, and Historical-cultural Analysis; Translation; Principles of Hermeneutics; Historico-Grammatical Exegesis; Redemptive-Historical Method; Various issues and disputes; and the Continuity and Discontinuity between the Testaments. 

As an addendum to the above, after a passage has been properly interpreted, the specific steps of basic exegesis for the purpose of are taught towards the organizing of a sermon that will preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to the Word.  Therefore this course also naturally leads to Homiletics and is an introduction to the “science” of preaching.

This book is required reading for this course from which assignments are given.
