Description

HEB 601 – Biblical Hebrew 1 Language Course

HEB 601 – Biblical Hebrew 1 Language Course, a 4 credit hour course of studies in the Masters Degree programs of Reformation International Theological Seminary

Course Description:  4 credit hours.

This course is a study of the basic grammar of the Hebrew language in which the Old Testament was written.   Dr. David P. Murray, who prepared the materials for the course, and whose voice is heard, begins with the very first steps in the study of the Hebrew alphabet, and leads the student through the multiplicity of nuances of the language.  In short order the student will be translating portions of Scripture–which, of course, is the purpose of studying the original languages.  All of the materials are based on the textbook–Biblical Hebrew, Text and Workbook by Victoria Hoffer, et al. (note that revised editions will be slightly different than what is used here, but any edition can be used)

Required materials for the course

HEB 601 – Course Payment – Biblical Hebrew 1 (4 credit hours)

This covers the payment for the 4 credit hour course for students enrolled at Reformation International Theological Seminary.  This applies only to HEB 601.  HEB 602, the second course, should be paid for under that heading.

LECTURES:  Biblical Hebrew DVD-ROM Course created by Dr. David Murray for HEB 601 & HEB 602 (this course is now given as a large download rather than on a DVD-ROM; these files will be provided to you via a link in your email after purchase, and must be run on Internet Explorer; instructions will be provided in your email)

This lecture download contains all the required instruction and lectures, along with useful Flashcards, Vocabulary listings and Assignments in addition to those found in the textbook and workbook.  This is used for both HEB 601 and HEB 602 (two courses in the first year of Hebrew language studies).  Consequently, if you purchase this book now, it will be good for both courses and no additional textbooks will be required for the second course.

This course requires a computer equipped to play DVDs and also Macromedia Flash Player® and Adobe Acrobat® which are available for free download off the internet if you don’t already have them on your computer.  It should also be noted that when Dr. Murray made this DVD-ROM he was living in Scotland and offered his services as an instructor for the course.  However, since he has moved to the U.S. and is employed at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, he is no longer able to do this.  Consequently, Reformation International Theological Seminary has its own Hebrew Professor who will assist all enrolled students through the course.

TEXTBOOK:

Biblical Hebrew Text & Workbook (2nd Edition) by Kittel, Hoffer and Wright (completely revised in this 2nd Edition by Victoria Hoffer).

This book is used for both HEB 601 and HEB 602 (two courses in the first year of Hebrew language studies).  Consequently, if you purchase this book now, it will be good for both courses and no additional textbooks will be required for the second course.  RETAIL price for this book is $97.95.  See our special deep-discounted price below.

This revised edition of the best-selling Biblical Hebrew  is thoroughly updated and augmented for a new generation of students.  Designed for use in a two-semester course, the book’s fifty-five lessons are constructed around biblical verses or segments and arranged in order of increasing complexity.  At the successful completion of the course, students will be well equipped to tackle prose passages on their own.

There are several varieties of these books available elsewhere, including separate CDs for memorization and such.  It is our strong recommendation (unless money is no object) that you see what is on our instructional DVD-ROM below before you make any additional non-required purchases since many of these things are supplied on Dr. Murray’s DVD-ROM.   492 pp.  ISBN:978-0-300-09862-4

Hebrew-Greek Bible (optional but highly recommended) by Trinitarian Bible Society and can be used throughout all Greek and Hebrew courses at RITS (GRK 501 & GRK 502 and HEB 601, HEB 602).

This vinyl bound hardback Bible of the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures was originally printed by the Trinitarian Bible Society in 1984 and again in 1998.  The text is that which underlies the Authorized English Version or “Ecclesiastical Text”.  The Old Testament came originally in 16th century by Jacob ben Chayim, a Jewish Christian who collected as many manuscripts from around the world and collated them to produce the most complete printed Hebrew Old Testament possible.  Originally published by David Bomberg in 1524-5, it became the standard edition of Hebrew Old Testament.  It was repeatedly reprinted and became the basis for the Reformation-era translations.  The Greek text is that also used by the Reformation-era Bibles.  The two combined became known as the “received text”.  2288 pp.   ISBN: 978 1 86228 1165
